Most athletes train their bodies and hone their craft, but performance is also mental. By developing mental skills, athletes can reduce stress, build confidence, and stay resilient under pressure. Research shows these skills are trainable, just like physical strength (Vealey, 2007). Training your mind takes consistency, repetition, and a willingness to grow. When practiced regularly, mental skills boost both performance and well-being.

Mental skills are trainable tools that elevate performance under pressure. Research highlights five core skills (Vealey, 2007; Weinberg & Gould, 2019):

· Focus – staying present on the task

· Confidence – building belief in your abilities

· Emotion regulation – managing stress or anxiety

· Goal setting – creating clear, motivating objectives

· Positive self-talk – reframing negative thoughts

With consistent practice, these skills empower athletes and high performers to thrive in high-stakes moments

In my Master’s thesis, one finding stood out: goal setting has the strongest link to mental health among life skills. Research shows that making incremental progress toward clear goals boosts motivation, sparks positive emotion, and deepens engagement (Latham, 2004; Lewis et al., 2021; Shultz et al., 1997). Whether in sport or at work, goals give direction and momentum.
