Frequently Asked Questions
Child counselling typically begins around age 5, though some therapists work with younger children using play-based approaches. At Associates Counselling Services in Lethbridge, our team works with children as young as 5 and youth up to age 18, with each counsellor specializing in different age ranges to provide the most effective support.
Common signs include persistent anxiety or worry, behavioural changes, difficulty managing emotions, social withdrawal, academic struggles, or reactions to life transitions like divorce or loss. If your child's challenges are affecting their daily life, relationships, or well-being for more than a few weeks, child counselling can provide valuable support and coping strategies.
Child therapy sessions are tailored to your child's age and needs. Younger children often engage in play therapy, using toys and activities to express feelings, while teens typically participate in talk therapy to process emotions and develop coping skills. Sessions create a safe, non-judgmental space where children can explore their thoughts and feelings with a trained professional.
The length of child therapy varies depending on your child's needs and goals. Some children benefit from short-term counselling lasting a few months, while others may need longer-term support. Most families attend weekly sessions, and your child's counsellor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that fits your family's situation.
Counselling can enhance your child’s felt sense of safety, expand their emotional regulation and coping skills, manage boundaries, and help the child process their thoughts and feelings. Whether you are looking for a therapist for your younger child, or your teen, our diverse team of counsellors are here to help.
